　　在许多权威学者或者精英学生的个人荣誉介绍里，我们常常会看见富布莱特的荣誉，至2019年，获得过富布莱特奖的人中，已产生：

　　39位国家元首或政府首脑(比如曾担任英国首相的苏纳克，在2006年时就是以富布莱特学者的身份在斯坦福大学获得MBA学位);

　　本期【MY BANZ STORY】非常荣幸邀请到了两次获得富布莱特高级学者的BANZ-VCE首席教师Olena博士。

　　Olena老师不仅拥有丰富的海外学术与教学经历，更是深耕学术英语教育、VCE课程设计的资深专家，在BANZ Infiniti College，她还带队我校澳洲交换生开展户外行走课堂实践，将理论学习与实景研学巧妙结合。接下来，就让我们走进Olena老师的世界，聆听她围绕学术英语提升、跨文化交流适应、VCE系统化备考规划等核心议题带来专业解读。

　　Q1：请简单介绍一下您自己以及您在英澳美的教龄

　　大家好，我的名字是Olena，我是BANZ-VCE的EAL课程教师，不管你信不信，我都是学校的第一位外籍教师，早在2017年创校时就加入了，可以说是陪学校从零开始。在与学校携手同行的这些年里，参与各项课程与项目的过程中，我从未离开过BANZ，一直以各种方式陪伴支持着学校。在工作最初的四年，我一直在上海本校区任教，而在最近四年，我虽然同样在教BANZ的学生，但是在澳洲墨尔本校区，为墨尔本校区的同学们授课。

　　My name is Olena,I'm an EAL VCE teacher here at BANZ,and believe it or not ,I was the first international teacher when the school started in 2017,actually from scratch and during all these years of my affiliation with the school and the programs.I actually have never left it and in one way or another I was present because of the first 4 years I spent just here in Shanghai and the recent 4 years,I have spent teaching also students from BANZ but in our Melbourne campus in Australia.

　　Q2：请用一个关键词描述您的教学风格并解释原因

　　在众多单词中，我可能会选择一个非常短的单词——Why。为什么是Why呢?因为如果我仔细看这些词语以及它们背后的理念时，这个词正是理解的关键，也是通往字母"B"的路径，它代表着无限的创造力，还有学术的求知欲，而最终通往的目标则是求真的热情。

　　Ok, out of many words I would probably opt for one very short which is “why ”, and I can explain why . Because if I look at the words and the slogans behind them, this word is the key to understanding, and It is a pathway to letter B, which stands for Boundless Creativity , on top of that Academic Curiosity, but the destination point is Zealous Pursuit of Truth.

　　Q3：您在波士顿大学访学期间，您认为那里的哪种教学方法最适合应用于我们日常的学术英语课堂?

　　感谢你的提问，在众多教学方法与风格中我最想强调的是互动式教学，因为它与我们刚才谈到的理念一致，对我而言，互动是一种教学风格，一种课堂氛围，是我和学生最自然的学习状态，而不仅仅是单纯的讲授与指导。我认为这在引导学生方面最为有效，在追求真理的道路上，在探索知识的经历里，更在他们深入钻研问题的过程中。

　　Maybe out of many kind of methods or teaching style,I would single out the interaction.Because it aligns with the previous one why, and for me interaction is the style, the environment , the natural habitat for me and the students.Instead of saying just lecturing and mentoring, I find it most effective in guiding students in their pursuit of truth and their exploration and in their kind of delving deeper into the issue.

　　Q4：您如何设计课堂，以便让不同专业的学生掌握专门用途英语(ESP)?

　　从研究与应用的角度来说，因为在美国的大学那里我任职于教学课程部，除了刚刚已经提到过的一点——互动，在这之外还需要充分信任学生，尊重他们的个性，尊重他们思想的多元，观点的多元。我认为没有所谓正确或错误的答案，对我们而言，这恰恰能体现出这个想法为何会在学生的脑海中这样形成。

　　In terms of research and application,because there I was affiliated with the curriculum department of learning. And again, I would maybe just mention the same one interaction but still trusting students more definitely respect to their personality, to their diversity of thoughts and opinions, and I would say there is no right or wrong answer , because for us,it can be the indicator of why this idea is shaped or being shaped in the mind of students like this.

　　Q5：在教授学术英语时，您会用哪些小任务让枯燥的EAL写作练习更有趣?

　　写作无疑是一个专门的领域，但我想说的是，并非任务本身枯燥，而是方法的问题，以及你如何对待这一学习领域。我的常用原则是——换位思考，站在学习者的角度，我会想方设法让学习变得有趣。我会先向学生提出挑战，会设计一些活动，展现他们的认知结构，也就是他们知道什么，他们能做什么，从这里出发，再进行规划与推进，对我而言，始终如此。我的指导原则就是，课堂首先必须有趣，否则一切都毫无意义。

　　Writing is definitely a specific area, but I would say it is not the task that is boring in itself, it is the approach and how you approach this kind of area of study. My kind of go to principle is position yourse in the shoes of learners. And again.I try to make it engaging in a way,I will challenge the students first,I will offer the activities that will demonstrate their schema ,that is what they know what they can, and starting from there I can plan and move on. But again every time for for me.So the guiding principle would be it needs to be engaging, otherwise it makes no sense .

　　Q6：对于中国学生，您如何在课堂上平衡纠错与鼓励开口表达这两件事?

　　首先，我们要明白的是，我们都是普通人，就像拉丁谚语所说，人非圣贤，孰能无过，用英语来说就是犯错是人之常情，没有不会犯错的人，也不存在能避开所有错误的学习者。首先我们必须保持包容，并且我们需要明白在学习的过程中，犯错在所难免。在当今的语言教学理念中，有一个重要的原则我认为是，不要阻碍学生表达，不要一出错就立刻打断纠正，先让他们说完之后，再根据错误类型在课堂上稍后集中处理，即便是批改书面作业，也没人想看到自己的纸上满是红笔修改痕迹，如果学生每次都被纠正、被打断、被阻止，显然会打击他们的表达欲，他们就会变得不敢开口，这也是我们在学习过程中最不愿看到的情况。

　　First, we need to understand that we are human beings, and as in Latin they say, Errare humanum est or in English we say To err is human.So there are no personalities,there are no learners who avoid all mistakes .First, we ought to be tolerant and we need to understand that this is the learning process and mistakes are unavoidable.In today's approach towards language teaching learning ,there is one good principle,I would say:not to block the student, which is don't correct mistakes on the go.First,let them speak, but then depending on the type of mistake.Okay, you can focus on it in class a little bit later. Even if we do correction of written tasks, nobody wants to see their papers bleeding.The same ways ,if a student is corrected interrupted stopped every time,it's common knowledge it will block, and the student will just climb up，this is the last thing we want to happen in our just learning process.

　　Q7：您认为我们通常会犯哪些错误，在学术报告以及课堂演讲这两大板块中，而其中的哪些错误在您的海外教学中也同样常见?

　　这个问题问得非常好。因为一方面，演讲是日常中不可或缺的一部分，无论是学术方面还是大学毕业生进入职场之后最常见。我相信老师们也会认同的几点，第一，照稿念而非真正表达。第二，整个演示文稿写满了文字，而演讲者实际上只是在照着读出来。在教学中遇到这种情况时，我会鼓励学生不要让幻灯片内容过载，只突出关键点与核心要素并多加练习表达，更加注重与观众的眼神交流。

　　So, this is a really nice question.Because on the one hand, presentation is kind of inalienable part in everyday life be it academic or just when university graduates move on to work.The most common and I think teachers would agree is:

　　Number.1, reading not speaking

　　Number.2, when the whole presentation has lots of text, and actually it is kind of something that presenter is reading out, in that case when I'm teaching that I would encourage students not to overload the slide, focus on key points and elements, and practice speaking, that is their delivery more focusing on eye contact.

　　Q8：您在美国大学任教的经历让您意识到，中美两国的学生在英语学习习惯上最显著的差异是什么?

　　这个问题也很好。我想特别指出最常见也是最突出的一点，中国学生普遍更依赖记忆，而国际学生，尤其是美国学生，更依赖思考，批判性思维，他们敢于提出问题，向老师提问质疑，这就是最主要的区别。

　　Nice question again.I would single out at least one feature more often than not, Chinese students rely more on memorization,while international and American students in particular they rely on their thinking, critical thinking,and they are not afraid of challenging teachers with questions ,this would be the major kind of difference.

　　Q9：您能否给在校学生以及新生提供一些建议?在EAL的学习方面，比如推荐一些外文读物来帮助提升英语写作能力与阅读理解能力。

　　第一条原则就是：去请教你的老师。如今的世界，充斥着各种各样的学习资源，但我个人建议大家使用来自权威机构和专业编者的资源，我更推荐这些机构的资料，BBC学英语/英国文化教育协会，他们所提供的资源是值得信赖的，并且过了时间的检验，其中也包含写作相关内容，他们设有针对不同英语水平的专门板块，从A1到Seed 2.0都有覆盖。

　　First, ask your teachers rule number one. Then ,today,I mean like the world is inundated with all sorts of resources.However, I would encourage use the sources from reputable,kind of providers editors.Personally,I prefer lots of materials from BBC learning English or ‌British Council,so they provide the resources that can be trusted and they have been tested in time,including just writing,they have special sections and areas for different levels starting with a1 up to Seed 2.0.

　　Q10：学生在BANZ Inifiniti College的日常学习是怎样的?我从很多完成交换学习的澳洲交换生那里了解到您经常在周末和课余时间带他们参加户外活动。

　　是的，这确实。并且我认为学生们非常享受在墨尔本的沉浸式学习项目，原因有很多。首先，他们很喜欢这里提供的不同教学方式，不同的学与教的风格。你提到的行走课堂就是其中之一，正所谓 "世界即课堂"，这类活动不只是去了解文化，更让学生沉浸在文化语境中学习。因为在前往各个目的地的途中，他们可以观察真实的社会生活，他们可以练习英语，而这一点非常宝贵，他们拥有了与英语母语者交流的初次体验。而且要知道，澳大利亚是一个多元文化国家，他们会看到很多和自己一样前来游学或学习的人，他们的英语也许并不完美，但他们依然乐在其中，简而言之的话，我认为他们非常享受这段经历。

　　Yes, that's true,and I think the students are really enjoying their immersion program in Melbourne,and the reasons are many.First of all, they appreciate different approaches,different learning and teaching styles offered to them, one of them you mentioned excursions is like when we say "the world is the classroom", and this is a nice activity not to learn about the culture but to be immersed in the culture and learn . Because on their way to certain kind of destination point they can observe the real life, and they can practice their English what is precious,they have hands first experience of communicating with native speakers.And not only because we know Australia is a multicultural country, and they can see people who are like themselves on a visit or just doing their studies ,whose English may be not perfect ,but still they are enjoying it .And if to cut a long story short,I think they're really enjoying it, thank you.
